Lines of tables and chairs filled the dining hall of the new Lord's Diner. Several volunteers arrived early in anticipation for the grand opening.

"I know there are a lot of people that maybe don't have transportation downtown. I just think it's a wonderful opportunity to open up one here," said Karen Ubben, volunteer.

The South Hillside location is the second Lord's Diner in Wichita. The one downtown has been around since 2002. The new location will serve much like the first location, every day of the year.

"We just hope that people will enjoy the food, feel nourished, and also be nourished by the respect and dignity in which they'll be served," said Wendy Glick, The Lord's Diner executive director.

In December, The Lord's Diner announced the former Bread of Life building, at 2825 S. Hillside, would be the new location for the city's second Lord's Diner.

"We're just happy to take over from what their ministry did and continue the feeding," said Glick.

Staff will roll down trays of food prepared at the downtown location and then delivered to the South Hillside location. Guest to the new Lord's Diner said this was a blessing to their community.

"Having it here means a lot because I know a lot of kids don't get to eat. At Colvin, they give them a food package but sometimes it runs out before the end of the week 'cause they have siblings," said Elaine Sisco, guest of the new Lord's Diner location.

The daily hot meals are free to guests. Several dozen volunteers serve the dinners every night. The Lord's Diner is now 95 percent staffed with about half from the South Wichita community.

"We've been working a lot with the schools and the churches in this area too. They're very excited and they've been helping us get the word out," said Glick.

Both Lord's Diner locations serve daily meals 5:30-7:30 p.m., including holidays.
