A Wichita sports tradition is changing its roots as the biddy basketball program passes hands.

Michelle Griggsby, biddy basketball organizer, said young athletes will not tip-off in the Garvey Sports Center this season.

The new director made the announcement during a biddy auction Monday. The Salvation Army put the equipment on the auction block after ending the 50 year program in February.

The Salvation Army pulled the plug on the youth basketball program citing the poor economy and lack of interest. Money raised from the auction will fund other Salvation Army programs.

"It's pretty sad. There's a lot of good memories. It's so sad to see these kids coming up won't have those memories as they are growing up," said long time Biddy coach Tom Staats. He bought all the trophies and wants to donate them to kids or coaches who won them.

But local parents are trying to get the organization back on it's feet. Griggsby said games will be held at a to-be-determined facility this summer. But she said plans are in the works to build a new 16-court facility.

Today's auction raised approximately $46,000 for the Salvation Army.
