The Greenwood County Sheriff says a man in the small town of Severy was stabbed to death Sunday night.
The sheriff's office is investigating the murder along with the Kansas Bureau of Investigation and they say they already have a suspect in custody.
The sheriff tells us 40 year old Dominic Angelo was found in the 300 block of North Mill in Severy where he lives. They arrested 48 year old Patrick Martin on US 54 east of Eureka after deputies spotted his car, which witnesses were able to describe.
We visited Severy and the people who live there and the Greenwood County Sheriff tell us they're just not used to that kind of crime in their community.
Less than 300 people live in the city of Severy.
“I have lived here all my life, I’m 42 years old so,” Severy Mayor Rodney Craig said.
In that time, Mayor Rodney Craig says he's never seen a murder in his hometown until now.
“Small towns, something like this happens it's pretty hard to deal with,” Craig said.
Greenwood County Sheriff Rusty Bitler says his deputies were called out to the 300 block of North Mill Sunday night. When they arrived, they found 40 year old Dominic Angelo lying in the yard near his home.
He had been stabbed several times in the back and died shortly after he was taken to the hospital.
“Our thoughts are out to family of the person who was killed last night,” Sheriff Bitler said.
While some deputies investigated the crime scene in Severy, Bitler says others searched for the suspect's car. Within 30 minutes, he says they pulled the car over near Eureka and arrested 48 year old Patrick Martin. A juvenile was also in the car, they were taken into protective custody.
Sheriff Bitler says they are still trying to piece together exactly how what happened Sunday night.
“At this point we're still trying to figure out how many people are involved in this. There was some sort of argument involved in this, we're just not sure of the extent of it,” Sheriff Bitler said.
For now, there's still a lot of unanswered questions about a violent crime that's shaken up a small town.
“You know something like that happens in your hometown. Small community like this it's pretty tough."
Sheriff Bitler tells us the man they arrested, Patrick Martin is from Hamilton. He's being held on second degree murder charges and will make his first appearance in court Tuesday.
Neighbors tell us Dominic Angelo lived with his girlfriend.
It's still not clear how the two men knew each other.
