A cyber- attack strikes law enforcement websites across the country jeopardizing investigations and leaking private information. Five sites in Kansas are among the victims of the hacker attack.

The Pratt County Sheriff says he found out his site was targeted about four weeks ago. He received a call from his web company saying hackers were at work on his web site. The group known as anonymous hit rural law enforcement sites looking for emails and credit card numbers. Sheriff Vernon Chinn was shocked when he heard the news.

"These things are really maddening," said Chinn. " I don't understand the thrill someone gets from hacking."

Luckily, he says his sight did not contain any confidential information, but many websites hit had tips about crime investigations and gang member profiles.

The Pratt County site was down for awhile. As of today the only part that isn't working is the jail booking roster.

A spokesman for the FBI's office in Little Rock, Ark., has confirmed that the agency is investigating the hacking theft of credit card numbers, email and other information from rural U.S. law enforcement websites.

Steve Frazier told The Associated Press on Monday that several agencies are involved in the investigation.

The hackers collective Anonymous said Saturday that it attacked 70 mostly rural law enforcement websites in the U.S. in retaliation for the arrests of some of its sympathizers.

The email was mainly from sheriffs' offices in Arkansas, Kansas, Louisiana, Missouri and Mississippi. Many of the leaked emails
appeared to be benign, but some of the stolen material seen by the
AP contained sensitive information, including tips about suspected
crimes, profiles of gang members and security training.
