Doug and Valerie Herrman have been sentenced to prison for felony theft. Judge David Ricke sentenced Doug Herrman to nine months in the Kansas Department of Corrections plus a $2,500 fine. Valerie Herrman was sentenced to serve seven months in prison and a fine.

The couple will also have to pay back the $15,488 they got for their adopted son Adam Herrman while he did not live with them. According to the Herrmans, 11-year-old Adam ran away in 1999, but they continued to accept a monthly $704 check from the state for his care.

The Herrmans had pleaded guilty last month in a plea agreement that would have given them 12 months of probation, restitution and fines. But the judge in the case, Judge David Ricke, told the couple he would consider their criminal history when making a decision on whether to accept the plea agreement, or recommend a different sentence. Ricke questioned the Herrmans from the bench during a hearing last month, asking if they knew where Adam was. Both said they did not.

The Herrmans had faced 5 to 17 months of incarceration and a fine of up to $100,000.
