New casual or work shoes are still needed for the event to be held on Tuesday at the Union Rescue Mission at 2800 N. Hillside.
Event organizers are in greater need for sizes 12, 13, and 14. All other new shoes will still be accepted at the Union Rescue Mission.
"A number of people that's all they had last year to get through the winter with flip flops so they were just incredibly grateful," said Dr. Naomi Shields, foot and ankle orthopedic surgeon who helped organize the event at the Union Rescue Mission.
For the second year, Dr. Shields and a group of volunteers will give free foot examinations and a free pair of shoes to about 120 homeless men.
The shoes were collected through the Nashville-based charity called Soles4Souls. They collect shoes from the warehouses of footwear companies and distribute them to people in need.
"The average American has really stepped up to the plate and understands there's a lot of issues in the economy and the world," said David Graben, Soles4Souls executive vice president. "And really have increased our donation base."
Dr. Shields said they plan to do another event for women's shoes soon.
