A Clearwater kindergartner has been identified as the victim in a tragic accident on Kellogg. It happened Saturday near Kellogg and Meridian as Wichita Police say one vehicle somehow jumped over the center barrier into oncoming lanes.
Grief counselors have been made available for children and staff at the Clearwater school system. 5 year-old Amber Randolph was killed as a pickup truck came barreling over the center median, striking the car driven by her 37 year-old mother head-on.
"We're trying to keep things as normal as possible for all students," said Mike Roth, Clearwater superintendent. "But keep in mind that our main focus is for the young lady and her family that is dealing with this tragedy."
Police are also asking for help from the public in trying to figure out what caused the pickup driver to lose control and jump over the median into the eastbound lanes.
"Originally, it was going westbound on Kellogg and that's what we need more information on in regards to helping us sort out exactly how that vehicle crossed and why it crossed over," said Wichita Police Captain Max Tenbrook.
Tenbrook did not rule out the possibility that the pickup driver had been racing with another person in the westbound lanes, which caused him to lose control.
"We have several witness accounts, but we still would like more information," Tenbrook said.
He declined to comment on what those witnesses said they saw. However, if you have any information on the driver who possibly caused the pickup truck to lose control, you are asked to call the accident followup unit at 268-4131 or Crimestoppers at 267-2111.
The child's mother and the pickup driver were treated and released from local hospitals.
