Investigators say a skull found in Southwest Sedgwick County belongs to a woman.

Campers found the skull near Cheney earlier this month.

Preliminary forensic evidence shows the skull is of a female, 18-25 years of age, of African descent, and has been there for possibly one to 15 years, said Sedgwick County Sheriff's investigator.

More information will be released on Tuesday.

The investigation into the mysterious skull found in Southwest Sedgwick County will continue into the coming weeks.

The Sedgwick County investigations team along with Anthropology experts from Wichita State University will return to the site this week, according to Sheriff Robert Hinshaw.

Deputies were called out to West 103rd St. South and South 343rd St. West, Friday night, when campers found a human skull in a nearby creek.

Hinshaw says the next step in the process is to determine the age, race, gender and how long the individual has been deceased.

The investigating team will return to the recovery site this week to try and find the rest of the remains as well. At this time, the Sheriff believes the skull may have floated down stream.
