A baby has died after being pulled from a backyard in-ground swimming pool in northeast Wichita.

It happened in the 5600 block of Coe Dr. just after 11 a.m. Tuesday.

Wichita Police said a one-year-old boy was pulled from the water by an 18-year-old female relative. Family members said the relative was the mother of the child.

"I would hate to be in her shoes right now because I would never want to feel the loss that she's probably feeling right now, especially as much as she loved her kids. She really loves her kids," said Lisa Cardona, relative.

When first responders arrived, they began CPR on the child, then transported the baby to a nearby hospital in extremely critical condition. Police said the child died from his injuries a few hours later.

Investigators said there were six other children at the home and were sleeping at the time of the incident.

Police are working this as a suspicious death due to the age of the child. They will present their findings to the district attorney's office where they will determine whether or not to file charges.

"Even one-year-olds can get out and walk around and crawl around. It's difficult but you've got to keep your eye on your kids or keep the doors locked or put a lock up higher up that the the kids can't get to," said Capt. Brent Allred, Wichita Police.
