Police in Arkansas City are in the middle of a homicide investigation after a stunning crime over the weekend. A 68 year-old woman is dead and her husband is behind bars, accused of killing her.
Police discovered the body of Terry Carson inside her home near 4th and Vine on Sunday. Shortly afterward, Bill Carson was arrested.
The Carson's worshiped at Redeemer Lutheran Church in Ark City. The family says they can't imagine that Bill Carson would kill his wife. Less than four blocks away from the quiet church where Terry Carson led Bible study for the mentally disabled, two mobile crime scene labs sit in front of her home. The front yards of two properties remain roped off with yellow crime scene tape.
"The reporting party was a neighbor and not involved with the incident," said Ark City Police Capt. Tom Scott.
Police aren't saying much about what they know about the killing other than to say that William Carson was arrested shortly after the investigation began. He is currently being held in the Cowley County Jail.
"By the time we got there, EMS had arrived on scene and some things had been moved," explained Chris Smith, Cowley County Attorney. "It appears that there had been an argument."
Meanwhile, those who know the Carson's are in shock, saying it's just unimaginable what has happened.
"They are friendly people," said neighbor Melody Bump. "They get along with people. She used to be a schoolteacher and she loved her kids and grand kids. Bill would never harm her. And in my opinion, Terry was his life."
The Carson's son told KAKE News Monday that his parents were married for nearly 39 years and that he doesn't believe his father could have killed his mother. Terry Carson is a retired school teacher who worked in the Wellington and Wichita school districts.
Bill Carson remains in the Cowley County Jail. He is being held on $500,000 bond.
