Some Salina residents are angry and sad about the apparent gang activity taking place in Sunset Park. 17-year-old Derek Rico was shot and killed in the park Sunday night, and police say some people involved claim gang affiliation.

"The beauty of the park is gone," said one resident, who did not want her name released as she feared her safety.

As friends and family of Rico gathered in the park Monday night, some nearby residents say they feel something has been taken from them.

"Gangs should not be in our park, let alone our town. It's time to take it back," she said. "It effects everybody, not just the people that knew him, but everybody in Salina it effects."

As more people arrived to Monday's vigil, more police arrived as well. At one point, officers completely blocked the entrance. When KAKE News asked about their presence, they said they were controlling traffic.
