Wichita police are reporting residential burglaries are up 7.3% compared to this time last year.

According to police, most burglaries happen in the summer months, but due to the warmer than usual weather and the state of the economy, the trend has continued later in the year this year.

WPD officers are hanging crime prevention tip door hangers on any open garage door they see. They have already distributed more than five thousand door hangers this year hoping it will help alleviate the growing problem.

Some crime prevention tips include:
- Keep your garage door closed
- Keep your doors and windows locked
- Report anyone or anything you think is suspicious
- Record serial numbers of all valuables, like TV's, computers, and game systems
- Don't leave anything of value inside your car
