Wichita's Fire Station 1 at Main and Murdock will reopen doors to the public on Friday.

Wichita's Fire Station 1, commonly known as the "Big House," at Main and Murdock will reopen doors to the public on Friday. After seven years, it will reopen its doors to visitor tours.

"It's a tradition in the fire department. Everybody wants to come to station one. We've got the most equipment. Kids like it, adults like it," said Bob Thompson, Wichita Fire Department Chief Prevention Officer.

During a tour of the fire station, people can see specialized firefighting equipment and a variety of fire engines. This is the only fire station where firefighters slide down poles when responding to alarms.

The second floor is not open to the public. The kitchen, a large training room, and the bunkroom are located upstairs.

"There's 15 guys that come in every morning at 7:00 and they stay here for 24 hours. And it's a little bit different than the smaller station. And we get all the visitors here," said Thompson.

To schedule a tour, call the Fire Prevention Office at 316-268-4441.
