Spirit SPEEA employees have overwhelmingly rejected a contract deal.
A total of 709 members of the Society of Professional Engineering Employees in Aerospace submitted a ballot. About 96.5 percent of voters rejected the contract with 684 votes. Twenty-five voters voted for the deal.
Earlier the union for engineers and technical workers at Spirit Aerosystems in Wichita, urged it’s members to reject the contract offer.
Members of SPEEA voted on Thursday on a ten year contract proposal. A strike vote was not on the ballot; the union wants to resume negotiations instead.
SPEEA represents about 2,300 professional and technical workers at the Wichita plant.
Spirit released the following statement; "We are very disappointed with this result, and will need to take some time to consider what it means and what comes next.It would be difficult to over-emphasize how hard the Spirit team has worked to try to achieve a shared understanding, and a new model of shared risk and reward. It’s clear we are not there. We have no announcements to make tonight. Now we need to do some thinking about what comes next."
