"When temperatures get above 55, get around 60 degrees, people just have to get outside. And the golfers, they can't wait to get out," said Don Harrison, golf course manager for the City of Wichita.

Golfers like Scott Baxter enjoyed the warmer temperatures and getting a chance to work on the green in January.

"This is way different than last winter when it was frigid the entire time. We've had years in the past that have been like this but it's really nice to get out and enjoy the sun and the warmth, and chip and put, and play golf," said Baxter.

Public golf courses in Wichita have seen an increase in rounds played this week.

From Jan. 1 to Jan. 5, there have been 1,055 golf rounds played. Last year, during the same week, 365 rounds had been played.

"It's encouraging. We've struggled the last few years with the rounds played. It's always important to get off to a good start 'cause you're ahead of the game right out of the get go," said Harrison.

There was also an increase last month, with 4,555 rounds played, compared to 3,594 rounds played in Dec. 2010.

"We've had a pretty good December. We had more rounds than we had last year. This year, we're off to a great start because it was bitter cold and a lot of snow last year, in January," said Harrison.

The Public Works Department has also seen some cost benefits in snow and ice removal. They have spent $85,615, so far, during this season, compared to $99,593 at this point last year. Most of those costs are for supplies that they need in stock for when a snow or ice event occurs.

Golf fans and city workers are hoping the weather continues on this mild streak.
