Several cars were struck by a motorist who suffered a medical condition before crashing on East Kellogg on March 3, 2009. The driver of the car had to be cut from the rolled vehicle. He was taken to the hospital with serious but non-life threatening injuries.

A report released Tuesday shows a surge in traffic-related deaths on Wichita roads. Wichita police blame distracted and drunk drivers for the growing death toll.

Officers investigating 13 deaths since January 1, compared that to 7 total fatal auto accidents last year. The deadliest year on record for Wichita was in 2006, when officers investigated 36 auto fatalities.

Police say 7 accidents this year involved drunk drivers. "When people become inebriated they tend to drive faster, they tend to take greater risks, and they don't tend to recognize those conditions as they arise," a Wichita police spokesman said.

Thirteen deaths have occurred in 12 collisions. There have been several accidents that have involved serious injuries as well. At this time last year, there were only 7 traffic fatalities on Wichita roads.

Traffic officers are asking that drivers remain vigilant as more people will be on the roads during the summer travel months.
