The Kansas Humane Society has taken a record number of animals in July and August..

"It's obvious that there's a need for us to be here," said Jennifer Campbell, director of communications.

The animal shelter admitted 1,789 animals in July and a similar amount in August. This month, they are on track to take another 1,700.

Cats are a particular challenge to the shelter because people are bringing litters upon litters to the facility. This is driving up the population at the shelter and stretching resources to the limit.

The shelter has more than 400 animals in their care every day. And every day, the organization receives requests from the public to take in more.

Campbell is urging the public to help save lives by adopting a pet or by making a financial gift to support the care and services these animals need.
