A group of Wichita realtors are using some sweat equity to help homeowners get out of trouble with the City of Wichita.

"It's people that fall between the cracks that can't really help themselves," said Jeffrey Richardson, volunteer.

This is the second home that members of the Wichita Area Association of Realtors chose to help by cleaning up trash and fixing minor repairs.

"This keeps them from going to court and having citations. Once we did the first one, it felt incredible. That lady was very, very appreciative," said Richardson.

The group is working with the City of Wichita to find violators who have fallen on tough times and need their help.

"You just have so many people, during these economic times, even as we talk about budget, there are things that we have to let go. This young man had to let go of trash service because he could not afford it," said Wichita council member, Lavonta Williams.

Starting early in the morning, the group of volunteers removed large barrels of garbage out of Kevin Inkelaar's backyard. Inkelaar was unable to keep up with his backyard because of a disability and grief from losing his wife.

"It's kind of hard and this is a blessing to me to get help from people that don't know me,"

The group expects to grow this home improvement project by continuing to help other homeowners in the community.

"When we got there in the morning, it was a jungle, and when we leave here, it will all be cleaned up and his home will be presentable again," said another volunteer, Joel Weihe. "It's a good thing."
