Wichita Police today released new information on a shooting that left two people dead and three wounded.
Police today identified those killed as Reimy Rivera, 6, and the gunman Valentin Vega-Soto, 36. Vega-Soto shot four people in a West Wichita home before killing himself. At least nine shots were fired in the home.
Investigators found at least one ounce of what appears to be methamphetamine in Vega-Soto's SUV after the shooting. They are waiting on toxicology reports on his body to determine if he was on drugs.
Police said Rivera's 9-year-old sister is improving. She is waking up, but is on a ventilator. The girls' mother, 30 year-old Gloria Morales, and grandmother, 56 year-old Elana Demeritus, were also shot. Morales was shot in the leg, while Demetrius was shot multiple times, including once in the chest.
Investigators said they haven't determined a motive for the shooting, although Vega-Soto and the girls' mother dated for a short time.
Vega-Soto was living in a motel. Officers said they found narcotics, that appear to be meth, in his vehicle.
Police said Vega-Soto broke the front door on the house early Thursday morning. He shot the two women in the living room before shooting the girls as the slept in their beds.
Investigators don't know if Vega-Soto entered the U.S. legally. Immigration and Customs Enforcement is assisting the investigation.
