Shortly after 8 p.m. on Friday, officers were called to a drive-by shooting in the 7000 block of West Freeman. No property was damaged and no one was hurt.

"It was determined early on that it was not a drive-by, that individuals were involved in the area and the gun was fired at least 3 times in to the air," said Lt. Ken Landwehr of the Wichita Police homicide unit.

The vehicle involved in the shooting was found about a block away in the 500 block of North Summitlawn, near the intersection of Central and Ridge Road. This was the residence of a 53-year-old woman.

While Police were investigating, a 33-year-old woman who lives at the Freeman address pulled up in a car and began to argue with the 53-year-old.

"These two individuals were screaming, yelling, and attempting to fight. Officers were trying to restrain the one woman that arrived in the vehicle, that did not live on Summitlawn," said Landwehr.

Police said the 53-year-old pulled out a lockblade knife and began striking 33-year-old, cutting her blouse and undergarments.

"An officer fired at her because of the eminent danger to the other victim and of course to the officer. He was actually standing between the two combatants at the time he fired," said Landwehr.

The officer shot the woman once on her torso and was rushed to a local hospital.

The 33-year-old received a minor scratch from the knife attack. Investigators do not believe the woman intended to strike the officer.

"The officer was of course in grave danger because the woman with a knife could've cut the officer at any time. But we do not believe at this time the intention was to cut the officer, it was to cut the 33-year-old woman," said Landwehr.

No officers were injured.

The 53-year-old remains in critical condition.

Police are still looking for the shooter of the Freeman incident.
