UPDATE: Friday, August 2, 2013

Police have arrested three people in connection to last month's fatal hit and run involving a man and child on horseback.

This morning, Wichita Police announced that they arrested 26-year-old George Donald Childers who they believe was driving the car that killed 49-year-old Lloyd "Sonny" Ferguson and seriously injured 6-year-old Eddie Caddell at 21st and Piatt on July 5. He was arrested for leaving the scene of a fatal accident and felony obstruction of justice.

Officers also arrested 19-year-old Colleen Lakay Fisher, who was a passenger in the car, as well as 28-year-old Elease Rowshall Childers for felony obstruction.

Police are also looking for others in connection to the case.

"There were other people in the community that knew about this accident, that failed to come forward to report it, which is very concerning," Wichita Police Captain Brent Allred.

Following up on a Crime Stoppers tip, this week, officers found the car they believe was involved in the crash. The car was hidden in a garage in the 2900 block of North Coolidge.

George Childers has been arrested before on charges of discharging a firearm in a vehicle or dwelling in 2005 and 2006. Records show was driving on a suspended license at the time of the hit-and-run.

Elise Childers was arrested on a drug charge back in August of 2011.

Wichita police say they've made a huge break in the case of a hit and run that left a man dead and a child seriously injured.

Late Friday, July 5, a man and a young boy on horseback were crossing 21st Street North from Piatt when they were hit by a car. The car quickly drove away following the crash.

Two others stopped to help, then all four were hit by a second car.

The man riding the horse, 49-year-old Lloyd "Sonny" Ferguson, was pronounced dead at the scene. The six-year-old boy, Eddie Caddell, was treated at a Wichita hospital and was later transported to a Nebraska hospital for rehabilitation. The two others were not seriously hurt.

Police had been searching for a 2003 to 2005 Mercury Grand Marquis, based on evidence left at the scene.

This week, a Crime Stoppers tip led officers to a home in the 2900 block of North Coolidge. Inside the garage, police found the car they believed was involved in the hit and run.

The tip also led police to additional witnesses in the case, but they have not yet located the car's driver.
