Hal Neukirch, Jr., had one final wish. On Thursday night, the Kansas soldier's wish came true.

"It's been great. It's restored our faith in people. It's given us something to concentrate on and know that my brother has left a legacy," said Tiffany Demo, soldier's sister.

Hal's story inspired friends and strangers to help him fulfill his wish of coming back home to Kansas.

"So many people that have given, have given because he's made a difference in their life. That is amazing. It's truly a gift for us to be able to see it," said Demo.

The 39-year-old chose to join the Army back in 2009. His sister said Hal wanted nothing more than to serve his country.

"He's amazing. I've always looked up to my brother and I couldn't be more proud that he went after his dream to be in the Army," she said.

While Hal was in Afghanistan, he began to fight for his life.

In 2010, he was diagnosed with brain cancer.

Last summer, he hold his wife he had one final wish.

"He had told her that he wanted to live his last days in El Dorado. He wanted to die here," said Demo.

When his condition worsened last week, the family wanted to immediately fulfill his wish.

The family contacted Butler County Emergency Medical Services to assist them in returning Hal home by ambulance, after Hal's condition prevented him from being transported by aircraft.

On Thursday, Hal left a hospital in Temple, Texas to his hometown of El Dorado, Kansas.

"We asked where you are and he said, 'Yeah, I'm at mom and dad's.' You know, he's relieved. You can tell he's relieved," said Demo.

It was relief that this son, brother, and husband had been waiting for.

"That's what this is about. It's about home and making his transition to heaven just the best we can do from this side," she said.

The family is grateful for the support. They want to spend all their time making Hal comfortable.
