The Sedgwick County Sheriff's office is releasing new details in the accident that claimed the life of a 3-year-old boy Thursday.

The accident happened shortly before 12:30 p.m. Thursday at the intersection of 53rd St. N. and 119th St. W.

Investigators believe the driver of a Chevrolet minivan heading north failed to stop at the red light, and was hit by a westbound oil tanker truck. The accident caused the semi to roll onto its side, partially crushing the minivan.

Three-year-old Dyron Schutte suffered serious injuries in the crash and was transported to a nearby hospital, but died soon after. His 9-month-old sister, Drianna, was also taken to a hospital in critical condition but has since been upgraded to serious condition. Both children were properly restrained in the van.

Their mother who was driving the van, 30-year-old Diana Schutte, is also currently listed in serious condition. The 62-year-old driver of the semi was not hurt.

Initial reports indicated Dyron had been thrown from the van during the crash, but that was not the case. The sheriff's office says there was some confusion immediately following the accident, and some witnesses had reported seeing victims outside the vehicle. To clarify, all three people were properly restrained in the van, and no one was ejected.

The Schutte family is from Halstead, but recently moved from Jetmore. The father is social studies teacher and girl's basketball coach at Halstead High School and the mother is a volleyball coach at Halstead Middle School.

Two funds have been set up to help the Schutte family. You can make donations payable to the "Schutte Family Fund," to either Halstead Bank or Farmers State Bank.
