The Wichita area has many small barbecue restaurants that specialize in the slow-cooked delectable meat. We asked for your suggestions, and then sent Mike Iuen and Don Hall, of KEYN-Radio, out to find some of the city's best barbecue.
We start our search for great barbecue near the downtown area with a couple of barbecue restaurants that are very popular with the lunchtime crowd.
Delano Barbecue is located at 710 West Douglas on the north side of the street. It's open 7 days a week, but only for lunch. Owners Scott and Terri Webb and their son, Clayton, really know how to keep people coming back for more.
Maybe it's the variety of the menu. There's the "The Carolina Style Pulled Pork" sandwich. It's smoked mean on french bread with horseradish, mayonnaise and pepper jack cheese. Baked beans and potato salad make up the mouth watering sides.
Don and Mike wanted to try a little bit of everything, but that was a tall order. A day at the Delano starts early as Scott Webb begins
smoking the meats at 6:30 a.m. The Webb's have been at it for 6 1/2 years and they say it's hard work and word of mouth that brought them success.
There are so many variables when it comes to barbecue. Some people like it hot and spicy, some like it lean, and some like it fatty. Mike and Don are hoping to sample each on their next stop. Arriving at B&C Creations on 335 North Washington, the smell of the spices alone are enough to get a barbecue lover excited.
B&C is only open for lunch, Monday through Saturday. The letters 'B' and 'C' in the restaurant's name stand for Bob and Carol. Bob and Carol are the original owners who opened the restaurant in 1996. Now, their son, Carey Maurer, owns the place. No soft music or candlelit tables at B&C. It's more of a brick garage converted into a restaurant.
But, people don't come to the restaurant for the scenery. They come for the food and they come from all over. Mike and Don say you can't go wrong with either Delano or B&C Creations if you're near downtown Wichita.
The next stop for our barbecue connoisseurs? Mike and Don will be checking out two places on opposite sides of town in their next report on the hunt for great barbecue.
