At the Great American Dirt Track near Jetmore, thousands of people are expected to gather on Friday and Saturday for one of the biggest races in Kansas this year.
"We have drivers representing 27 different states that will be at this event," says Patrick Johnson, the dirt track's owner. "As you go from the Missouri line to the California coast, it's the highest paying event this summer for them."
He says there is a buzz in Jetmore, and with 80+ cars on display, why wouldn't there be?
"They'll be driving six inches apart and running 800-900 horsepower. On this 3/8 mile track, they'll be hitting speeds of 115 to 120 mph."
The super-late-model dirt track races are part of the Show-Me-State Showdown, and it's expected to send a jolt through Jetmore.
"It's great for the economy," adds Johnson. "The hotel is packed. All the restaurants are starting to get busy with more people coming into town. It's a huge economy boost."
Races begin Friday night at 7:30 and Saturday night at 7:00. Tickets are $30 at the gate.
