UPDATE: Friday, November 9, 2012

Wichita Police are looking for witnesses who saw the fatal crash on Kellogg and Zelta, Thursday around 8 a.m.

They are specifically interested in talking to the driver of a white pickup that was driving westbound on Kellogg and avoided hitting the vans involved in the crash.

"This pickup left heavy skid on the roadway to avoid collision. We do not believe this pickup had anything to do with the crash, actually did avoid the crash, but we would like to talk to that driver," said Lt. Joe Schroeder, Wichita Police.

Police said a 31-year-old woman was driving a tan colored van with five of her children inside. She was driving eastbound on Kellogg and tried to make a left turn onto Zelta. Police reports show that she "turned left into the path of a westbound van."

The traffic lights were working properly at the time of the crash but it is unclear whether she had a protected left turn at that time.

"Rule of thumb, a vehicle turning left needs to yield into oncoming traffic, at all times, unless you have a protected turn. Even in a protected turn, that just gives you the right of way. It doesn't mean you're not going to get hit," said Schroeder.

Three children were ejected out of the van, including 3-year-old Mario Enrique Zamara-Portillo, who later died from his injuries at a hospital. His 10-year-old sister remains in critical condition.

"I can't think of a worse thing for a parent to go through than to lose a child in a collision that you were involved in. That's why I just hope that people learn from these things and work to buckle their kids in," said Schroeder.

A total of seven people were injured, which included the two drivers of the two minivans.

Zamara-Portillo is the second child killed this year from a car crash. There have been 21 traffic fatalities this year.

Police said a green minivan pulled out onto Kellogg in front of a westbound red minivan, and was broadsided.

Three children in the green minivan were ejected, with two suffering critical injuries. Four others were also hurt.
