Wichita water rates will start to rise as soon as August. City Council members are in agreement that this is what needs to be done to cover the monetary loss caused by Mother Nature's wet spring seasons.
The question the City Council is now trying to answer is how to raise the rates so it is fair to everyone.
Currently, the council is considering two different options. The first option would be an across-the-board increase for everyone. The plan would charge an additional $2 on top of a 5% hike for the next three years.
The second plan would vary from home to business. This plan would charge each customer per unit of use, meaning, you use more water, you're charged more.
"To be honest, I think a flat rate across-the-board seems more fair," said Wichita resident, Heather Bowen. "I don't think because someone uses more across the street they should have to pay more... They're going to pay more anyway," she said.
The issue will be addressed and voted on at next weeks city council meeting.
