Wichita police say a 20-year-old man is in critical condition after crashing his car into an electrical pole in SW Wichita overnight. The accident happened before 3:00 Friday morning near Pawnee & Bonn.

Paramedics used the jaws of life to pull the driver out through the roof of his car.

Investigators say the man crashed while chasing a woman with whom he'd had an argument. The woman called police, and was on her way to her own home when she says the man began following her.

Police say the chase lasted about a mile, with speeds reaching 70 miles an hour. The woman told police she slowed down suddenly, fearing her speed would cause an accident.

That's when police say the man behind her hit his brakes, lost control, and slammed into an electrical pole.

The crash knocked out power to around 800 homes overnight. Westar crews were on-scene within the hour to begin restoring electricity.

The man was taken to Via Christi St. Francis Hospital in critical condition.
