This year is shaping up as the unluckiest year in more than a decade. Today is just one of three "Friday the 13ths" of 2009...the next comes in March and then again in November.
The Stress Management Center and Phobia Institute estimates roughly 20 million Americans fear Friday the 13th...similar to those who refuse to walk under a ladder or designate a 13th floor in a hotel.
Allene Cunningham is likely the state's most well traveled psychic. She's been in the business for decades. Now more than 80 years old, the Wichita native has appeared on TV and radio shows around the country with people like Oprah Winfrey, Donnie Osmond, Huey Lewis and Don Imus. She knows a thing or two about superstition.
"You know, superstitions have been around for eons, ever since you or I can remember!"
According to Allene, there's good news for anyone afraid of booking an airplane ticket or making deals on this supposedly unlucky day...
"It isn't that that's actually happening...But you make it happen because you believe that's the way it is."
She says the same can be said for the many Americans worried about job security in these tough economic times.
"Oh yes, there's an increase in concern because even if they've got a good job, they don't know how long they've got the good job. There's rumblings, you know. Stuff being said."
Allene's number one remedy for recession fears is to step back and give our worries some perspective...
"To turn it around you’ve got to see the picture you want even if what you want might not be there at that moment in time!"
Allene says the best part of her job is helping clients identify goals and making them happen.
