Celebration Ends With Deadly Accident

What started as a celebration ended with a deadly crash in West Wichita.

Wichita Police Sgt. Kenneth Kimble said the driver in her mid-20's hit a patch of ice that flung her car sideways into a power pole at about 3 a.m. near the intersection of Maple and Sheridan.

When emergency crews arrived, they found the driver's side door suffered immense damage and the woman was not breathing. EMS Captain Kevin Lanternman said the woman was pronounced dead at the scene.

Antoinette Gunter, 27, died in the crash. Police determined Gunter had recently moved to Wichita from Oklahoma and had been celebrating good grades with her parents a short time before the crash. Investigators said Gunter's car was on West Maple when it struck a puddle, started to hydroplane, then continued sliding on ice.
