Crime Prevention Tips

The police and sheriff's department need your assistance in preventing preventing residential burglaries. Here's what you can do help prevent you and your neighbors from becoming a crime victim.

1. Call 911 if you see anything suspicious in your neighborhood. Police tell us too many times people don't want to get involved, or they don't think their information is significant. But the job of the police is to check these things out. All it takes is a phone call. If you know something about crime that's not in progress, and you want to remain anonymous, you can call Crimestoppers at 267-2111.

2. Take part in or start a neighborhood watch program. It's a partnership between law enforcement and the community to reduce and prevent crime through citizen empowerment. It is one of the most effective and least costly methods to prevent crime. It's about watching out for your neighbors and their property. Pay attention to who is coming and going in your neighborhood.

3. Get a security audit from the police department. Many police departments including the Wichita Police Department have a Department of Community Affairs that will send an officer to your home and let you know what you can do to improve the security of your home and discourage intruders. They go over everything from lighting to locks. It's free and it's smart.
