It happened around 5 p.m. Thursday at Winfield High School. A family member said 15-year-old Taylor Murphy became short of breath during practice and collapsed. Staff called 911 and she was rushed to an area hospital where she later died.
The cause of the high school sophomore's death is currently unknown.
The high school's principal said Murphy was well-liked by her peers and teachers.
"It's been a very difficult time for all of our students and our staff," said Principal Trenton Creeden. "She was very popular, very well liked, just a bright, beautiful, wonderful young lady."
Murphy's step-father said she was a healthy teen and participated in various activities, including cheer, volleyball, and choir.
