A historic downtown building is celebrating a big milestone this week.
The Wichita Orpheum Theater marked its 90th anniversary on Tuesday. But the anniversary isn't the only thing worth celebrating at the Orpheum right now.
“The level of our programming has stepped up dramatically,” said Jennifer Wright, president. “We expect to reach over sixty thousand in attendance this year."
That’s up almost 15,000 from last year.
Time is also taking toll on the 1,300-seat theater. The Orpheum is currently fundraising a multi-million dollar renovation.
Supporters say the theater is tuning up, despite its age.
“It’s great to see it being rejuvenated,” said John Bardo, Wichita State University president. “This is a great facility to bring back to life.”
The center of performing arts in downtown Wichita first opened its doors Sept. 4, 1922.
