The first Avatar movie made more than $760 million domestically and $2.7 billion worldwide after its release in 2009. With record-breaking box office numbers like that, it's certainly worthy of more than two sequels.
That's why Twentieth Century Fox and director James Cameron have upped the number of planned Avatar sequels from two to three, according to Variety.
The first sequel will be in theaters by December 2016, and the second will follow in December 2017. The third sequel is not expected until 2018, but all three films will be shot at the same time, with production starting next year.
Screenwriters who have worked on War of the Worlds, Rise of the Planet of the Apes and Savages have been hired to pen the new Avatar stories.
