J.K. Rowling has won her copyright infringement lawsuit against a Web site operator who had been set to publish a "Harry Potter" encyclopedia.

A federal judge in New York says Rowling proved that Steven Vander Ark's "Harry Potter Lexicon" would cause her irreparable harm as a writer, and permanently blocked publication of the guide. He also awarded Rowling and Warner Brothers $6,750 in statutory damages. Warner Brothers owns the intellectual property rights to the Potter books and movies.

Vander Ark is a former school librarian and Potter fan. He runs the Harry Potter Lexicon Web site, which includes detailed descriptions of characters, creatures, spells and potions found in the seven-book series.

U.S. District Judge Robert Patterson said the Web site was "not a fair use of the Harry Potter works" because it "appropriates too much of Rowling's creative work." But he said reference works that seek to aid readers of literature generally "should be encouraged rather than stifled."
