On September 12th, 1996, 16 year-old Cherie Fox was shot to death inside the apartment where she lived in North Wichita. She had only lived in the city for about two months. The crime happened at the Falcon Point Apartments near 21st and Meridian.

Detective Tim Relph says Fox's father discovered her body when he returned home that afternoon. She died of multiple gunshot wounds.

Relph says Fox really didn't even know very many people in the Wichita area because she was so new to town.

"She didn't have any history here because she hadn't been here very long," says Relph. "She had friends in Arizona that had colorful pasts, though."

In fact, detectives even went to Arizona to investigate. They also gave many people who lived in Fox's apartment complex lie detector tests.

"We polygraphed a tremendous number of people who had access, maintenance people. It didn't appear as though there was forced entry," explains Relph. "But that doesn't rule out the possibility that she didn't let the person in."

Detectives have always kept open the possibility that this was a random crime, but Relph admits that it certainly doesn't appear that way.

"It's a tough case, but it's also a case with a lot of inside information. Somebody knows. A single informed tip could reenergize this case."

It's been 12 years since any solid leads have come in on this case. If you have any information, call Crimestoppers at 267-2111. If your tip leads to an arrest, you could be eligible for a cash reward of up to a thousand dollars. Nobody will ever ask your name.

Crimestoppers of Wichita/Sedgwick County is a non-profit organization of citizens against crime.

Being a single female, my first thought would be did you check out the maintance personal, when was the last time the lock were changed, who had keys. I once rent an apartment in wichita and the night I moved in The maintance man, came and let himself into my new apartment, and brought friends thinking me the new tenant wasn't moving in till the next morning to drink and kick it, well he was stock, and thank God my boyfriend was there. Just thought of this...good luck I hope you can bring back the safe street of wichita, it was a nice place to grow up.
