The murder of a Wichita man who was selling bootleg alcohol out of his home remains unsolved. It happened in the 500 block of North Poplar St.

"He was running a bootleg house. On July 13th, 2004, he had a couple of gentlemen who wanted to buy some liquor from him," says Wichita Police Detective Hans Asmussen.

On the night he died, Asmussen says Hurst very likely had a large amount of money inside his home. Two men knocked at the door, began a transaction, but then pulled out a gun and shot him in the neck.

Hurst lived for about a month after he was shot. He was able to give police a vague description of the intruders. What stuck out was that Hurst said the killers had shiny shoes.

Meanwhile, Asmussen says the killers likely had a plan.

"They're not going there just to buy some liquor and then say, 'Oh, let's rob him, too.' Generally, we see that's the intent," Asmussen says.

Police continue to hold out hope that someone, somewhere, knows about the crime.

"Generally, when people commit crimes, they like to brag about what they did. Especially years later. Sometimes they think the police have forgotten, they're not looking for anyone, so they'll brag," says Asmussen.
