The murder of Janet Wikel has been unsolved for more than 21 years. Wellington Police have no leads. Chief Tracy Heath is hoping that talking about the case again will refresh somebody's memory.

Wikel was a typical 32 year-old woman. She was going about her regular routine on May 16th, 1986. She told coworkers as she left that she was going to stop by the post office.

She made it to the post office, but was never seen again. Her car was found there... her paycheck and some personal belongings were gone.

"Those items have never been recovered," says Chief Heath. "The paycheck was never cashed."

Investigators have run into brick walls since the beginning of this case. They've never identified a clear-cut suspect and say it's highly unlikely that Wikel committed suicide.

8 years later, in 1994, a farmer walking along the Chicaskia River near Corbin discovered a human skull. The next year, a human leg bone was found in the same area. Heath says the remains were eventually identified as those of Wikel's.

"I feel there's somebody in this community who has information that we do not know," says Heath. "Certainly, before my retirement, I would like to see a conclusion brought to the case. To simply answer, 'What happened to Janet?'"

Janet Wikel left behind a mother and a child who still live in the area.
