With about a month left in the vacation season, there is still time to take the family on a getaway.

Here are some tips from aboutdor.com to save money while traveling:

This may sound odd, but if you fly to your destination, rent a car. It sounds expensive, but can many times save you money rather than using an airport shuttle. It also gives you flexibility. Look for coupons before you leave.

Stay where kids eat free. Then, as an adult, split your meals. It can mean an enormous savings. Eat lunch in your hotel room. It saves money and you can get the basics at the local grocery store.

Take advantage of coupons for lodging, food and airfare. Book reservations online and use your AAA card or other discount cards.

Use multi-day passes at attractions or go during the late afternoon. Many attractions will make your ticket good for the following day, too. Bring and use refillable water bottles.

Before going on your trip, give each child a set amount of money to spend. That saves the “whining for dollars” situation that many families experience on-site.

Spend a day enjoying your hotel amenities. If there’s an on-site pool, since you’re paying for it, use it.
