This month, Consumer Reports came out with a list of small suggestions from its readers, that they say, can add up collectively to big savings.

  • Grow your flowers from seeds. Flats are easier to buy, but much more expensive.

  • Set up a direct deposit in your savings account. You’ll soon get used to having that money deducted.

  • One reader wrote: Every time I get a five dollar bill, I put it in a drawer.

  • Skip the big-name concert and buy the concert DVD instead. The DVD usually costs about $20.

  • Put a fare-alert on your favorite travel site. When deals come up, you save money.

  • On vacation, rent an apartment. You live like a local and it’s cheap.

  • Buy wine and beer by the case. It’s cheaper.

  • To save even more, cut out the wine and beer.

  • Smash your toilet paper roll so it’s no longer round. That way it won’t accidentally roll off unused paper.
