The Salvation Army has named the employees of Spirit AeroSystems, Inc. the recipients of the 2012 Others Award.

"Through their efforts to support The Salvation Army, Spirit AeroSystems has demonstrated a true heart for the Wichita community," said Douglas Rowland, Major and Wichita City Commander with The Salvation Army. "It is a pleasure and an honor to recognize them with this award."

"I'm proud to accept this award on behalf of Spirit AeroSystems' nearly 11,000 employees here in Wichita and 16,000 employees around the world," said Mark Suchinski, vice president of Spirit's financial planning and estimating organization. "Spirit employees are generous with their time, talents and financial resources to make the communities in which we work, live and play a better place."

In receiving the Others Award, Spirit AeroSystems joins a legacy of other community leaders, including the Machinists Union; Friends University; Cargill, Inc.; the employees of Koch Industries, Inc.; and the Downtown Rotary Club.

The Others Award was named after a significant event in The Salvation Army's history, during which its founder, William Booth, sent his annual Christmas telegram. Then an aging man who was short on funds, Booth was sensitive to the fact that telegrams were priced on a per-word basis. So, he carefully chose the one word that most adequately expressed what was nearest to his heart: "Others."

The award will be presented at The Salvation Army's annual Civic Luncheon on May 15. Sponsors of this year's Civic luncheon include the Fred and Mary Koch Foundation; Spirit AeroSystems, Inc.; Westar Energy; Intrust Bank; and Speedy Cash.

"This Civic Luncheon is an important event for us," said Rowland. "We can only meet the critical needs in this community through the generous support of individuals, businesses, foundations and churches. We hope to see many of them at the luncheon."

Mr. and Mrs. Edward Bell were also recognized as Foster Parents of the Year; and The Wichita Fire Department and Miriam Overholt received Exceptional Service Awards.
