Nearly a thousand people came out to support three Hutchinson children coping with the loss of their parents. Wilfrida Masabah was found murdered in her home on Sept. 29. Investigators say her husband, Hoseah Kaminja, killed her and later took his own life.
The two older children both work with the elderly in Hutchinson. Their co-workers organized the community fundraising event at the Kansas State Fairgrounds last month.
The garage sale, silent auction and meals raised $5,700.20, with approximately $200 still anticipated. The motorcycle tour raised nearly $800.
Leftover food was donated to the Masabah children and the Food Kitchen. Leftover clothing, kid's toys, bedding, and kitchen pots and pans from the garage sale went to First Call for Help. Leftover books were donated to a library that burned down, and all other remaining garage sale items were taken to Goodwill.
The Masabah family moved to Kansas from Kenya, leaving the children on their own. A memorial fund has been established for the children.
