As the temperature starts to rise, the American Red Cross is helping Kansans beat the heat.
The agency began distributing fans during its annual free fan giveaway Wednesday. The Red Cross is planning to distribute 1,000 free fans to the needy.
Organizers said more people are asking for help in the struggling economy.
“Last year we set a record at more than 950 fans,” James Williams, Red Cross spokesman said. “This year we are prepared to give 1,000 fans.”
The fans are being given away at the American Red Cross, 1900 E. Douglass, from 8:30 a.m. until 2:30 p.m. through Friday.
People wanting a fan will need to provide a Kansas Driver’s License and proof of current address. There is a limit of one fan per household.
