Workers at the Finney County/Garden City Animal Shelter say the new shelter is running out of room, meaning more animals will have to be euthanized.

Danna Jones, transfer coordinator for the shelter, says shelters in Colorado and eastern Kansas have cut back on the number of animals they are taking from the western Kansas shelter.

Michelle Ray, a spokeswoman for the Denver-based Dumb Friends League, says the economy has caused more people to drop off their animals, so many shelters are near capacity.

Finney County shelter officials say the facility, which has room for 60 dogs and 40 cats, has been incredibly busy since it opened earlier this year. The shelter is increasing efforts to recruit volunteers.

The Garden City Telegram reports that the shelter has euthanized 879 cats and dogs this year.
