On Saturday, June 19, Brit Alley of Wichita had purchased Powerball and Hot Lotto tickets for that night’s drawing. He also had purchased a Mega Millions ticket thinking Mega Millions was drawn that same evening, when in fact, it is drawn every Tuesday and Friday.
“The next day, I checked my tickets at a convenience store,” explained Alley. “When I checked the Mega Millions ticket the Check-A-Ticket machine read, ‘Drawing has not occurred.’ Since I had never seen that before, I folded the ticket and put it in my pocket. I thought maybe a mistake had been made when I purchased the ticket, so while I was still at the store I decided to buy another one.
Since Alley picks his own winning numbers by using family birthdays, the two tickets were identical.
“The following Wednesday while I was reading the newspaper, I saw the Mega Millions numbers listed from the previous night’s drawing,” said Alley. “That’s when it dawned on me that Mega Millions was drawn on Tuesdays and Fridays, so I pulled out the second ticket I had bought and couldn’t believe what I was seeing. I had matched four numbers plus the Megaball!”
The winning numbers in the June 22 drawing were 12-17-21-23-30 Megaball 24 Megaplier 4. By matching four numbers plus the Megaball, Alley won $10,000 but since he purchased the Megaplier option, his winnings turned out to be $40,000!
“I was thrilled to have won $40,000,” said Alley. “Then I remembered the first ticket I had bought. I ran into the bedroom and dug through the hamper for the pants I had been wearing Sunday. I still had that ticket in my pocket.”
After finding the first ticket he had purchased, Alley couldn’t believe he had won $40,000 on each identical ticket, bringing his total winnings to $80,000!
“What are the odds of something like this happening?” said Alley. “Our family and friends can hardly believe this story.”
Alley and his wife Diane, who have been married nine years, plan to pay bills with part of their winnings and donate some to their church.
The winning ticket was purchased at B&H Fast-Trips Company, located at 2796 S. Seneca in Wichita.
