One of the few dog races at a Kansas track is taking place this week in Abilene.

The National Greyhound Association spring meet started Tuesday and runs through Saturday. It gives greyhound puppies their first chance to race on a track.

The dogs compete in 550-yard races. Gambling is not allowed but dog owners are competing for price money totaling about $40,000.

Tim Horan, assistant director for the Greyhound Association, says the only other races in Kansas now are at schooling tracks.

The puppies will race Thursday and Friday. A puppy auction for breeders will be Saturday.
