Wichita Festivals, Inc. (WFI) has announced today that volunteer recruitment is in full swing for Riverfest, May 7-15.

Volunteers have been buzzing around the Wichita Festivals, Inc. offices for several weeks packaging Riverfest buttons, making copies and helping with various mailings. However, with the Festival only a month away and a good portion of the pre-Festival prep work out of the way, the focus is now on securing volunteers to work the nine-day event.

Volunteering for Riverfest has its perks. It's a great way to network, meet new people and support your community. You also have the opportunity to win Air Tran tickets and gift certificates to area businesses and restaurants when you sign up and complete your volunteer shifts.

“There are over a thousand positions left to fill, and there are still many favorite shifts available,” Kim Wickliffe, Volunteer Manager, said. “Our biggest needs for volunteers are in button sales and food court ticket sales. But, if you would rather not handle money, you might consider helping with the paddle boats or with the clean team in the Food Court.”

Here are a few examples of the volunteer positions that need to be filled during the Festival:

Button Sellers: This position is most critical to fill. Button sellers assist Festival attendees with information and sell buttons at specific locations. Volunteers for this position should have excellent customer service skills and have cash-handling experience. Most shifts are approximately 3-3.5 hours.

Food Court Ticket Sales: If you love funnel cakes, turkey legs and watching people, then the Food Court might be the spot for you! This position sells food court tickets and buttons to Festival attendees. Volunteers are paired in air-conditioned ticket booths at the various food court locations. This is a fast-paced environment. Volunteers will need to have excellent cash-handling and customer service skills for this position. Shifts generally last three to four hours.

Merchandise Associate: If you have any retail experience, the Festival Souvenir Store is the place for you! Merchandise Associates sell festival souvenirs, run the cash register, provide positive customer experience for Festival attendees and price and re-stock merchandise as needed. Cash-handling experience and the ability to bend, stoop and lift is needed.

Plunge: If you enjoy competitive sports and being near the water, you will enjoy helping with this event. We are looking for volunteers to act as Timers and Referees for Plunge. Volunteers will need to be fair-minded and organized with the ability to pay attention to small details in this fast-paced volunteer position. An informational meeting will be held in late April to bring our Timers and Referees up to speed on the different Zones of this years’ Plunge event.

Several other volunteer opportunities exist during Riverfest. To view all, visit the Festival website at http://www.wichitafestivals.com/volunteer.html and browse through the Volunteer Opportunities. Sign-up early to ensure a time that best fits your schedule! You can also contact Volunteer Manager Kim Wickliffe at 316-267-2817 ext. 11 or e-mail kimw@wichitafestivals.com.

Riverfest will be held May 7-15.
