Attorney General Steve Six's office is hosting a series of document shredding events around the state to help Kansans protect themselves against identity theft.

The shred-a-thons are being held in recognition of National Consumer Protection Week. Six's office says residents can bring sensitive personal documents such as bank statements and tax forms to the events and have them shredded for free.

The first shred-a-thon took place Friday in Dodge City.

Others are scheduled for Monday at a Wal-Mart in Leavenworth and Village West in Kansas City, Kan.; Wednesday at the Topeka Shawnee County Library and a Wal-Mart in Lawrence; Thursday at Wal-Marts in the Johnson County cities of Overland Park and Roeland Park; and Friday at a Wal-Mart in Wichita.
