A small Lyon County town may soon have a no-kill animal shelter.
Danita Schimmelpfenig (Shih-muhl-fah-nig) has received a license to open the shelter in the Lyon County town south of Emporia.
Schimmelpfenig is the animal control officer for Madison. She has purchased a house to use for the shelter and hopes to open by late spring or early summer. The shelter is not affiliated with the city shelter.
She says the shelter will be a no-kill facility.
Until the center opens, adoptable dogs will be kept in licensed foster homes in the Madison area. Schimmelpfenig already has 13 pets ready for adoption.
