Kansas has awarded $2.1 million in grants to help rehabilitate homes for low-income families.

The funds from the state's housing agency will go to eight cities and two counties.

Communities may use the money to repair roofs, replace windows, fix up foundations or siding, upgrade kitchens or bathrooms or improve heating or plumbing systems.

Homeowners don't have to pay the money back unless they sell their properties within three years.

The largest grants of $275,000 each went to Kingman and Rice counties.

Emporia received $250,000 and Chetopa was granted $237,000. Caldwell, El Dorado, Liberal and Parsons each received $225,000, and Lyons and Manhattan received $100,000 each.
